OCTOBER IS BLACK CAT (AND DOG) APPRECIATION MONTH

PAWS is dedicated to finding all breeds loving homes but each October, we highlight our black cats and dogs. These animals are often overlooked when it comes to adoption simply because of their coat color.

DID YOU KNOW?

Black animals in shelters are often the last to find their forever homes, have lower adoption rates than other breeds and the highest euthanasia rate nationwide.

DEBUNKING THE MYTHS

Black cats have never been bad luck! Unfortunately, in Western cultures, black cats are symbols of evil omens, familiars of witches and in some cases, considered shape-shifting witches themselves. It’s an antiquated notion but superstition persists to this day!

Black dogs have a bad wrap thanks to literature throughout the ages. Folklore has defined black dogs as supernatural, spectral and demonic. The hounds of hell are black and American film depicts the devil in the form of a black Rottweiler or Doberman Pinscher.

WE KNOW BETTER!

Black cats and dogs are as lovable as their more colorful counterparts. The color of one’s coat should not impact adoptability. Look into the eyes of a black cat or dog and see a heart of gold!

DISPELLING DARK RUMORS

Every year, we receive concerned remarks about adopting black cats in the month of October. People have heard tales of occultists seeking black animals for use in rituals on Halloween Night.

However, there is no supporting evidence nationwide to back up this rumor. In fact, most animal adoption agencies like PAWS, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, and Helen Woodward Animal Center (to name a few), have adoption policies in place to ensure that all cats and dogs adopted, go to loving forever homes.

PAWS goes out of its way to make sure that animals adopted through our agency join safe and loving families.

PAWS HAS ALMOST 30 BLACK CATS, KITTENS AND DOGS WAITING FOR YOU!

October is the purrrrfect month to celebrate Black Cat (and Dog) Appreciation Month because Halloween continues to perpetuate a spooky image of black animals. We celebrate the beauty of our black animals during October. Each sweet furry face brings good luck with every snuggle.

Because PAWS has received 3 new litters of kittens, not all of our pets are visible on our Petfinder page. Please visit the shelter during regular business hours to meet our many cuddly kittens in person.

Black is beautiful – come see for yourself!
